Bath Body Disc

I have had a bad back on and off now for 6 years ( not long after having my son ). It 'goes' in the same place every time, right at the bottom, just above my bum. I have been told it is not a slipped disk, I cant remember who by or how they know. When it goes it lasts for about 5-7 days. It used to happen once every few months but now Im more careful and it only happens once a year. The pain is awful and I get shooting pain spreading sideways into my hips. The only way I can get comfortable when walking is if I walking 'lob-sided', the top half of my body being out of sync with the bottom half. Painkillers do nothing, I have tried all kinds, heat patches and hot baths do nothing for it. I like to keep moving around as I do believe it helps. I just want to know what it is and if there is a cure?
Sounds to me like you have some form of Sciatica. I've given a link to a Wikipedia discription of it below.

The reason I say this is because I have it and have the same symptons, almost exactly. I got it from having a prolapsed disc back in the 90's and have suffered since. Sometimes I have ended up in hospital (only twice mind).
First and foremost, go to the doctors asking about it. They may help...but ususally don't as its out of their hands. Physio would be next. The best form I had (and it was perfect) was seeing a chiropractor - but I understand there are good and bad ones. Anyway, this helped me in my last bad time.
From there I do regular back exercises, keep the weight off the front (I found that aggravates it). Apparantly yoga is good too.
As for painkillers - you're like me, normal stuff (paracetemol (tylenol) or asperin) arn't effective. The times I had to go to hospital they needed to give me sadatives - muscle relaxants. Because, where the nerve gets trapped, your muscles lock and tighten which makes the pain and problem worse. Using these pills relaxed the muscle and helped untrap the nerve.
I've had Dyhydrecodein and Tramadol in the past. My sciatica has been so bad, I've been bent over one side with no feeling in my foot and quarter feeling in my leg and agonising pain around the hip and lower back.
It does get better - remember good exersise, stretches, yoga, sedatives (for when its bad) and a chiropractor.
