The structure and pollination of the flowers are rather interesting. The hard, beak-like sheath from which emerges the flower is called the spathe. It is placed perpendicular to the stem, giving it the appearance of a bird's head. The flowers, which appear one both the spathe, consist of 3 sepals and 3 bright orange petals blue. Two of the blue petals are joined to form an arrow-like nectary. When birds are sitting for a drink of nectar, petals open to cover their feet in pollen.
