Incense Collection

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I need help on deciding what to use to hold the charcoal. Whenever I go to stores they have small collections of overpriced, elaborate burners, but I just want something simple and cheap since I'm broke.
So I'm wondering...can I just turn a pot upside down, and burn it on top of that? I know it sounds really, erm, unorthodox, but I'm cheap like that. I know that the charcoal can get EXTREMELY hot, but I figure since pots are made to be over open flame, it's okay.
Would that be safe? Or will I end up burning my apartment down?

I'll search around and see if there's an Indian store I can get to; there should be, seeing as I live in NYC.
If you have access to an Indian supermarket/store near where you live you should be able to buy a cheap clay incense burner. Indians use it a lot and they're quite cheap to buy.. maybe a couple of dollars
