I just got into burning incense and was wondering if there are any health issues I should be aware of. It would also be nice to know if there are any benefits to using incense. I mainly got them because my parents are cigarette smokers and I hate the smell so I thought incense would help it go away.
I don't know if there are health benefits, although there is probably some aromatherapy argument there and I know that some of the incences that I burn give me a wonderful emotional lift to smell...
I have often wondered about risks related to this, because I use incense often...I do not typically burn it in enclosed areas where there is no air flow, and I will usually just light it, scent the air a bit then put it out. If I have windows open and there's a cross breeze I just let it burn.
I often use three or four insence sticks in different locations when I am working or hanging outside, they tend to keep insects away.
Er...there is the other risk, that of burning the house down...so be sure you are using some sort of proper fireproof holder. My brothers best friend caught his house on fire when he was a teen by leaving a stick of incense burning unattended.
Really safe insence burners are easy to make with some sort of decorative dish that is a few to several inches wide and at least two inches deep. Fill the dish almost to the top with sand, add some stones or whatever else you like that is fireproof and decorative to the top, just shove the end of the incense stick into th sand so it is held securely. If my dish is less than 6 inches wide, I'll put a larger plate or something under it to catch the ashes. These can be interesting little alter type decorative items...
