Mix Incense

Teacher brought up the prospect of making ones own paints by using crushed pigment and an oil-based medium some time ago. I've been contemplating this.
I know there are pigments that you can buy--however, I don't have access to them. So I'm looking for alternatives.
I've been thinking about;
Incense - some sticks come in pretty colours, but the teacher brought up the problem of the colours eventually, and probably quickly, bleaching;
Crushed glass, but if any glass particles make it into the air... Well, that wouldn't be very fun;
Coloured chalk...
Anything else?
And any glaring problems with any of the above other than whatever is already noted?
OK, you're asking about one of the more traditional elements of oil painting, that of making your own paint. Up until the 1800s, making your own paint was the only choice to most artists, and any apprentice would spend years learning not only the physical motions and methods, but also the various recipes for a particular color. For example, flake white, which is a basic white that has been used for hundreds of years, calls for the use of lead, but other whites might call for titanium or zinc.
And, above all, the qualities of the ingredients make all the differences. Linseed oil comes in a variety of types, from the cheap boiled stuff available at your local hardware store, to highly refined and thickened types such as stand oil.
Now then, after considering the type of oil, then you need to consider the "pigment" itself. Remember that you are putting it into oil, which will change the color and "opaqueness", if you will, of the pigment. The chalk and incense will, most likely, thin out to virtually nothing, since they are organic, and being put into an organic solvent (oil). As to glass, you'd think it'd be a good choice, but by the time you crush it small enough to become a paint, it loses most to all of its color, and isn't worth the effort.
So, what's your option, you're probably wondering.
Dirt.
Ground.
Yep, soil, the vary stuff you walk on. OK, well maybe not soil, per se, but dirt, absolutely. "Earth colors" are called that because they are made up of earth. Burnt and raw siennas, for example, came originally from dirt in the area of Sienna, Italy. And so it goes.
So, go online and look up methods for actually making the paint. You'll soon be up to your elbows in grinding, mulling, and a variety of other activities. About a half mile from my door is a beautiful orange dirt that becomes a nice, deep red. After sifting, grinding, mulling and storing, it makes a great addition to my palette, and adds to the interest of my buyers.
And it calms the heck out of you, the motions can let you self-hypnotize, and unlock ideas for the color for later paintings. Bon chance!
